New Year's 2010
Thursday 31 December 2010

A new year! A new decade! Dan, Charles, Carla, Laura, and I welcomed 2010 into existence very much like how we did the past two years: with a movie synched-up to do something interesting at midnight.

This year we chose to remember the late actor Jack Albertson by watching three movies from his repertoire: Lover Come Back, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and The Poseidon Adventure. The last of these was our midnight movie, which we began at 11:35:00 so that the on-screen characters counted down the seconds to midnight along with us, in real time, causing midnight to occur simultaneously both on-screen and off.

Josh has got his official New Year's crew patch, so he's all set to do this thing.

I don't know how Carla puts up with Charles. By now even Mother Teresa would have thrown her arms up in dismay and returned to Albania where she belonged.

This may be a none-too-subtle gesture to stop taking her picture. On the other hand she may simply be adjusting her glasses.

Gosh dangit, why does this always happen? Every time.

Josh got a new camera for Christmas. It works well with mirrors, which is actually a perk.

Meijer trip! Charles had to clean out his car despite just doing that on our last road trip two weeks ago.

Encino Man costs six dollars, which is already seven dollars too many.

Laura cautiously makes her way through the movie gauntlet, flanked by all manner of visual media.

Dan finds the one thing that Christmas had so cruelly denied him.

Felicity paid us a visit, though it was only for the duration of our Meijer trip. She smelled like mustard, which was kind of peculiar.

I'm not a sportsman so I guess I can't rationalize what one would do with blood-flavored snacks for catfish.

Do catfish get off on the delicious, iron-rich taste of blood?

Dan is always in the market for a new image, but something tells me that this won't be his look for 2010.

Did you know that a machete costs less than a single pair of thermal underwear? It's true.

Felicity and the machine full of toys that she cannot have. That she cannot ever have.

It's 11:35! Start the movie!

Charles carefully ensures that Dan receives nothing but fizz with only the tiniest amount of actual liquid.

This was tricky. Charles has perfected this process after years of experience and classes at night school.

Well here's a nice little movie showing the stroke of midnight 2010 and how that transition went for us.

Laura sees the camera as a fiend determined to make her look bad That's a lie. It's the person using the camera who also has a website to host the photos that make her look bad.

A bit of self-mocking by Josh about the previous video leads to Laura and Charles striking up a musical interlude for your entertainment.

And that's that! Hopefully everyone out there had a pleasant new year and enjoys 2010 for all it's worth.

At left is James Steele's impressive volume on Queen Mary and at right are two commissioning brochures for the ship as well as a 2002 promotional brochure from Cunard when they were building Queen Mary 2. In the center is a Queen Mary souvenir. It's a salt, pepper, and mustard set.

This was our schedule for the new year movie synch-up. Math and careful timing were employed to make this work.
