Gophers in the Park
Saturday 8 May 2004

Gophers in the Park was the first warm-weather gathering since Gopherpalooza in 2002. Jeff and Erin's house served as the central location of the party, although two separate excursions were made to Shoreland Park, chock full of fun playground equipment. Alisa also made some tasty grape leaves for the event.

Event Coordinator Cristine Larsen reported, "there was tons of food, tons of fun, and way too much Phil. Gopher Gathering 2004 can officially be titled 'Battle of the Sexes' thanks to a dirt mound and some seriously dangerous attacks. The gopher cake, complements of Chef Marie, was awesome! Thanks to all who attended and to all who brought food or drink."

Attendees: Jeff Osthimer, Erin Byrne, Phil Dake, Ian Malcolm, Cristine Larsen, Josh Gulch, Marie Jarden, Tahirih Kuhns, Sean Nestor, Alisa Rowland, Adam Pickard, Dan Norton, Paul Arquette, Carey Fisher, and Shawn Fisher. Special guests Tosca and Roo.

...And Phil This is one of those pictures you take of an interesting event -- in this case Jeff walking Roo -- and then you develop it and find Phil just standing there in the way.

This happens quite a bit.

An Ian and a Phil at work and at play Ian and Phil banter while trouble brews in the background: Jeff is lifting Tosca onto the jungle gym.

Jeff & Tosca slide Jeff takes a ready and willin' Tosca down the double slide. That may or may not be an animal protection activist approaching.

Sean's mug In fact it turned out to be Sean, who it was rumored had weathered a hurricane and the Paparazzi to get here.

Jeff and Tosca slide again (!) Continuing, Adam prepares to catch Jeff and Tosca coming down the spiral slide.

After jumpin' around Jeff, Paul, Shawn, Adam, Dan and Ian after an uplifting romp on the ole trampoline. Phil's back is in the foreground, in case you were wondering and I know you were.

(Did anyone notice that Jeff changed his shirt?)

I'mma cut you Jeff uses what is undoubtedly one of the largest knives in his kitchen to cut a pineapple that Adam is holding in half.

Cristine is not amused.

... For some reason or another, Jeff wore the severed scalp of the pineapple upon his own head. Whether it be an act of victory or otherwise we may never know.

On the other hand, he may just be impersonating Don King.

Pineapple eaters! Erin finds herself trapped between two pineapple eaters. Two dirty, dripping, pineapple eaters.

And Shawn.

The Cake. This was the cake Marie baked to commemorate the recent birthdays of Paul, Carey, and Cristine.

Trivia: The poll depicted was #002, something of a favorite among certain people.

Forensic scientists will note that this photo was taken at Marie's apartment. It's being placed here for relevance.

Happy Birthday... Ian uses his method of "forced persuasion" to prompt Paul into blowing the candles out on the cake that was 1/3 in his honor.

...to you! Carey, Cris and Paul blow out their candles!

Important note: This is the only picture of Alisa on the entire Gopher Gathering!

Into the woods With eating and birthday tidings out of the way the gathering shifted back to the park, with Tah leaving us for a drive back to Aurora.

Well, Josh was the first to scurry down this fallen tree over the mud, and soon everyone followed like the lemmings of lore.

Adam's publicity stunt tonight on E! Jeff, Marie, Phil and Josh stand around in a vain effort to catch Adam should he slip while Paul strolls by. Paul looks like he should be thinking "Huh, well that's different."

He's an Adam on the edge! With Adam successfully on the summit, Phil, Jeff, Marie and Josh seem proud of this accomplishment. Yeah, like they actually did anything. Adam did all the work while everyone stood around like "Glad it's not me."

I'll take the high road, you take the low road... Jeff scales the top of the tube slide while Josh shimmies up the inside. Needless to say, Jeff won, but there was no real contest. Let's see Jeff go though the slide next time.

Dan up top After climbing the swingset Dan proclaimed, "I'm king of the park!" Actually he didn't, but he should have.

Jeff's turn To prove he was more manly than Dan, Jeff tried to climb the swings. The result is inconclusive from photo evidence, which shows Dan to be the winner.

Adam's flip Jeff, Marie and Erin witness the beginning of Adam's well-executed flip off the swing.

Jeff says "How he do that?"

Phil dragged out Due to a question on his biological position, Phil is physically dragged out of the Battle of the Sexes by Adam. Erin, Marie and Cristine cheer while Josh watches from the tire swing.

Phil loses More of Phil's fall from grace.

Cristine falls The fatigue shows on Ian's face in the wake of his falling of Cristine. Josh has turned his back on the carnage, and Marie seems to be calling for help. Yes, Ian has accomplished a lot today.

The final battle They invade our space and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no farther. And I will make them pay for what they've done!

The final battle begins.

The battle ends Following the climatic conclusion to the Great Battle of the Sexes, the various parties make up. Jeff hugs Erin, Ian and Cristine shake hands, and Josh stands around looking pathetic. Dan and Marie share the celebration while Adam strolls away looking troubled by this alliance. Might peace only be available at the end of a sword?

The heroes relax Jeff, Phil and Dan relax after the conclusion of the Battle of the Sexes. There was no clear winner of the engagement, and casualties were light, but perhaps it was important ... for all mankind.
